Gulf State Park spans 6,150 acres along Alabama’s coast, where white-sand beaches, freshwater lakes, and coastal forests meet. A free park tram connects trails, the pier, and nature attractions, making it easy to explore without moving your car.

Explore the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail – Pedal or stroll 28 miles of paved trails through nine ecosystems, from pine forests to marshes. There is a free bike-sharing program. 

  • Relax on White Sand Beaches – Enjoy 3.5 miles of pristine coastline perfect for swimming, shelling, and sunbathing. Catch both sunrise and sunset on this south-facing shore.
  • Fish from the Gulf State Park Pier – Stretching 1,540 feet, it’s one of the longest piers on the Gulf. Look for covered seating areas, wheelchair-accessible rail fishing, and a retail tackle shop. 
  • Visit the Nature Center – Meet native wildlife like alligators and turtles, explore interactive exhibits, and stroll the butterfly garden at this free hands-on coastal “living museum.”
  • Swim or Paddle at Lake Shelby – A calm, freshwater lake with a roped-off swim area, plus kayak, canoe and stand-up paddleboard rentals. There are picnic tables and a playground.
