Green Bank Observatory

Green Bank Observatory
Time Needed: half-day
Experience Type: historic landmark, innovation

Located within the National Radio Quiet Zone, Green Bank Observatory safeguards science from radio interference. Home to the world’s largest fully steerable telescope, it offers tours, exhibits, and trails that showcase exploration of the universe through radio astronomy.

MUST-DO CHECKLIST

  • Take a Guided Bus Tour – Start with an intro video, then board a radio-quiet bus for behind-the-gates access and close-up views of the Green Bank Telescope.
  • Explore the Science Center – In the Exhibit Hall, learn about radio astronomy through interactive exhibits and displays. Explore how scientists use radio waves to study the universe.
  • Go on a Walking Tour – Stroll the scenic observatory grounds at your own pace, using a trail map to explore towering telescopes against West Virginia’s mountain backdrop.
  • Join a Behind-the-Scenes Tour – See inside historic telescopes and learn more about Green Bank’s historic role in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence in the cosmic universe.
  • Eat at the Starlight Café – Grab simple fare on-site like pizza, subs, and hot dogs. Bring cash, since credit cards and phones don’t work in the Quiet Zone.

Plan Ahead: For a rare behind-the-scenes look at the observatory’s electronics lab, telescope receivers, and the GBT control room, reserve the High Tech Tour—offered only on the second Thursday each month. Space is limited and advance reservations are required.
